American pugs possess a distinctive appearance different from their Chinese counterparts, lacking the former’s smashed face and having longer noses and legs. At present, those retaining the features to the tee have been an outcome of selective and intensive breeding.
They, too, have been inbred to pass on their genetic features to the future generation. Inbreeding could successfully retain the cute look brought about by their squashed face, short muzzle, and short legs.
Inbreeding comes with its banes, like congenital disabilities and even deafness in those born out of recessive genes.
