One of the biggest USP of the Pug is its cuteness, mainly achieved by its flat, wrinkled face and characteristic short nose.
It also has a big, round head, large, globular-shaped eyes generating a soft expression, and thin, small, velvety ears folding forward (button) or backward (rose).
Their coat color is either fawn seen in most Pugs to the less common black. The short square muzzle appears right in front of their face forming a black mask, more prominently seen in the fawn varieties than their black counterparts. They even have a slightly arched neck, well-muscled body, and a tail curled over the hip.
The present appearance of the Pug is majorly a result of selective breeding to achieve that cuddly look. Traditionally their look differed a little, as seen in paintings and artifacts of the 18th and 19th centuries. The dogs then had longer noses and legs, while in some, the ears even appeared cropped.
The French bulldog and the Boston terrier, both flat-faced breeds have the closest resemblance to the Pug, alongside some other dogs as mentioned in the list.
